Kyren Wilson became a first-time World Snooker Champion in May taking over from Luca Brecel who claimed the prize the year previous.
Wilson came through a pretty cushty draw, avoiding the top 16 throughout the tournament, with the exception of the quarter-final where he faced John Higgins.
Ali Carter called it the worst World Snooker Championship ever but Wilson could in theory only play what was placed in front of him.
There couldn’t really be any further contrast between Wilson and the 2023 winner Brecel – and Matt Selt has been discussing the differences between the two stars.

Matt Selt shares the differences between Kyren Wilson and Luca Brecel
In today’s era, there are all sorts of characters on the World Snooker Tour, with Wilson and Brecel two of the top performers.
Brecel’s form has been patchy at best since winning the World Championships for the first time – and in this year’s tournament, he lost from two up with three to play against Dave Gilbert in the first round.
Selt believes the two most recent winners are completely different and has been sharing why.
He told The Snooker Club podcast: “They are two completely different characters. You have Kyren and snooker is top of the list, apart from his family, snooker is at the top of the list for everything with him. It will be a completely different dynamic to his season and his career.”
Wilson is model World Champion and good for the game
Nothing against Brecel but his win at The Crucible came out of the blue and even the young Belgian was shocked by his feat.
Before the tournament he won he admitted he’d not been practising regularly and didn’t think his game could take him to glory.
As for Wilson, he waited for the day to come for many years – always truly believing that one day he would be a world champion.
That day has now come and he will look forward to playing in the bigger events and being announced as the reigning world title holder.
The talented player could now become a multiple champion and nobody can take away the fact that he’s got his hands on the trophy once.
Wilson is a brilliant role model for younger players and he’s a worthy World Snooker Champion.
