Wilson has now won six titles and winning one of the game’s big ones has been a long time in coming for the player.

With one of the best cue actions in the game, it was always anticipated that he’d go and win the game’s biggest prizes at one point.

Wilson earned a place on the World Snooker Tour through the Q-School system in 2011 and won his first title when he beat Judd Trump in the final of the Shanghai Masters in 2015.

Wilson was never going to get better chance to become World Champion

Nothing against the quality of the opposition that he came up against but this was clearly Wilson’s time to shine.

In the opening days of the tournament, Wilson saw Mark Williams and Mark Selby dumped out from his half of the draw and that opened the door somewhat.

Okay, Wilson will point to the fact that he had to face John Higgins in the quarter-final but he’s not had the best of years by his own admission.

The technique and all-around matchplay that Wilson possesses had seen experts predict him to win a big title at some point and this year he duly obliged.

Wilson finally has the monkey off his back now and it will be fascinating to see what this does for the career of the new world number four.
